Whistler was a respected English-born Jamaican-based painter, muralist and illustrator. Born in Jersey, Channel Islands, cousin of the artist Rex Whistler and glass engraver Laurence Whistler. He attended Victoria College, Jersey, 1915–23; studied architecture at the Architectural Association’s school under Sir Howard Robertson; was commissioned in the Army for several years in the mid-1920s; and was at the Slade School of Fine Art under Randolph Schwabe for three terms, 1936–8. After World War II service in the Royal Air Force Whistler lived extensively in Jamaica. Solo exhibitions were held in London and the provinces, in the Cristoforo Colombo on the Mediterranean Sea, in Jamaica, New York and Miami. Later ones included The Building Centre, 1957, and Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, 1959.
