Strickland was an award-winning English-born South African Expressionist. He studied Fine Art at the Tonbridge Art School, Kent, UK. In his early years he spent time living and working as an artist overseas, in particular Ceylon (Sri Lanka) during World War II. He relocated to Malaysia between 1953-59, before settling in the Natal area in South Africa. Once arrived he worked as an art instructor. Strickland was known for his colourful character studies, particularly of the local indigenous Basuto people. He participated in several group exhibitons from 1962 in South Africa and was represented by the Lister Gallery from 1970 in Johannesburg, where he held multiple solo shows. In 1963, he won the prestigious Art SA Today award for Contemporary painters and was a member of the NSA and the Highway Art Group.
