Rowlands is a forgotten Australian Modernist. She studied at the South Australian School of Arts & Crafts from 1939-1946. She relocated to Melbourne after finishing her studies. The original gallery label on verso reads that Rowlands was based in East St. Kilda, and this work was most likely an entry to a Melbourne Art Prize. It is a wonderful example of Australian Modernism similar to Dudley Drew, Adrian Feint, Albert Sherman and Nora Heysen.
