Mármol was a respected, award-winning Spanish-Australian Abstract Expressionist. He was born in Andujar, Spain and came to Australia in 1962. He studied art at the School of Arts and Crafts, Madrid and by scholarships at the Royal Academy of Ceramics under Chicharro and at the Academy of San Fernando in that city. He held his first one-man exhibition at the Collectors' Rendezvous Gallery in Sydney in 1965 and has since held one-man exhibitions in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Adelaide and Brisbane. Previously in 1963 Mármol participated in 'Spanish Painting Today' in Madrid and has since been included in numerous group shows in Australia. He won the Bronze Medal 'City of Cartagena' for painting in 1954. In 1958 he was designated by UNESCO Executive Delegate to the formation of the UNESCO Centre for Art and Education, and in 1960 founded the UNESCO Centre of Madrid where he remained as Secretary-General until 1962. He is a Fellow of the Academia Zenith of Costa Rica. Ignacio Mármol is represented in the Commonwealth Collection, in the State gallery of New South Wales, in the gallery of Newcastle City and in many private collections in Australia, Britain, Europe, the United States of America, Mexico and New Zealand.
