Sydney Long A.R.E. was an important, influential Australian Symbolist and pioneering Printmaker. He was an exceptionally fine etcher, but also developed a name for himself painting stylized Australian bush landscapes. Influenced by Heidelberg School artists such as Arthur Streeton and Frederick McCubbin, he pioneered a new style of Australian paganism and Art Nouveau, creating a mythical and poetic vision of the Australian bush. His paintings and etchings are widely represented in all major Australian Galleries and several English collections.
In the early 20th century, art students at academies such as the Julian Ashton Art School would sharpen their skills by copying original works at the Art Gallery of NSW. Rarely are these works if such high quality (and size), so this copy by Browett is a gem!
