This particular painting is based off Bartolomeo Manfredi's masterpiece "Cupid Chastised" (1613), itself inspired by the work of Caravaggio. The original hangs in the Art Institute Of Chicago. This work comes from the Martin Sachs Collection.

"Mars, the god of war, beats Cupid for having caused his affair with Venus, the goddess of love, which exposed him to the derision and outrage of the other gods. Venus implores him in vain to desist."
