Lear was a famous English Artist, Illustrator, Musician, Author and Poet. He began as an Ornithological Draughtsman for the Zoological Society, employed by the Earl of Derby to illustrate his vast menagerie. One of the greatest ornithological artists of his era, he taught Elizabeth Gould whilst also contributing to John Gould's works and was compared by some to the naturalist John James Audubon. He was also acquainted with the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood. From the 1840s he travelled widely, particularly around the Mediterranean, North Africa and South East Asia, cataloging his journeys in his distinctive watercolour, wash and oil. His works were benchmarks in travel circles, often used for travel compilations, publications & lithography of the era. He also authored a series of 'nonsense fiction', short stories, poems and limericks which were incredibly popular at the time. Over time his success as an author overshadowed his output as an artist, however, his artworks are highly sought after by collectors, and command huge prices. This impressive ink, wash & body colour of his beloved Lake Como, and will be available shortly alongside our interesting collection of 19th century British works on paper!!
