Jessup was born in Victoria in 1920. He studied at the East Sydney Technical College and was awarded the NSW Travelling Scholarship in 1945, He moved to France in 1948, living there for the remainer of his life although he did return to exhibit in Australia. He also held sold exhibitions in Paris, New York, Washington and Los Angeles. Jessup had a close relationship with fellow mid century painter, Margaret Olley (1923-2011). They painted and exhibited regularly together. He was a second-generation member of the Sydney Charm School (Merioola School), exhibiting at Macquarie Galleries & Artarmon Galleries.
