Illies was a prominent German Symbolist & Graphic Artist. He studied at the Academy in Munich with Professors Lesker and Herterich. In 1897 Illies was co-founder of the Hamburg Artist Clubs. In 1906, he became a member of the German Association of Artists. Starting in 1908, Illies was a professor at the State School of Applied Arts in Hamburg. Illies created an extensive photographic catalogue, and was the author of numerous poems. His works are represented in countless Major National Galleries.
