Gill was an influential, controversial English Sculptor & Printmaker. He was known for his association with the Arts and Crafts movement. He is regarded as one of the most important English artist-craftsmen of the 20th century. He tried to revive a medieval religious attitude towards art, believing in social reform and in integration between craftsmanship and industry, art and religion. He was a prolific book-illustrator, and the cleanness and simplicity of his woodcuts and lettering. He was also an accomplished typeface designer, creating many famous fonts including Perpetua, Perpetua Greek, Solus, Aries, Bunyan and Joanna. Gill is considered a rather infamous figure for his controversial stance on art that most often involved erotic imagery, despite his strong religious views. He is one of the best examples historically of the importance of separating the artist from their art; Although he was a reprehensible person who committed inexcusable, harmful acts in his life, his influence and legacy is undeniable in the annals of 20th century British Art, and he received the highest British award for designers, Royal Designer for Industry.
