Gaskell RE was a prominent British Painter & Etcher. He was educated at the Leys School, Cambridge and studied art at the Royal College of Art, London, then in Paris and Italy. After graduation, Gaskell became a University Extension lecturer at Oxford, Cambridge and London on the history of art and on Italian painting. He was appointed Assistant Master at the Ilkley School of Art from 1886 until 1888, and from 1896 until his retirement in 1930, he was Headmaster of Regent Street Polytechic, London, responsible for the art training of students. He was also a Staff Lecturer at the University of London. In his own work, he painted mainly landscapes in oils and watercolour and was also noted for his etchings and mezzotints. He exhibited work at shows of the Royal Academy, Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour, and Paris Salon. Gaskell was elected as a member of Royal Society of British Artists in 1896 and a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1911. He was also a member of the Art Workers Guild and on the committee of the Durer Society. Examples of his work are in the collection of the East Ridings Museums Service and in the Cleveland Museum of Art, Ohio.
