Francis is an iconic American Abstract Experssionist. His artistic development was affected by his exposure to French modern painting, Asian culture and Zen Buddhism in particular. His paintings of the 1950s evolved through a series of stages, beginning with monochromatic abstractions, followed by larger richly colored murals and "open" paintings that feature large areas of whiteness. By the 1970s, he was producing 'Fresh Air' paintings, like this piece, created by adding pools, drips and splatters of color to wet bands of paint applied with a roller. One of America's most important mid-century painters, his works appear in National collections all over the world, such as MOMA NYC, The Met, The Kunstmuseum Basel, the Idemitsu Museum of Arts, Tokyo, and the Centre Pompidou-Musee National d'Art Moderne, Paris. This original gatefold lithograph (limited edition of 1000) was printed by renown printer, Adrien Maeght of Paris, and published by Carnegie Institute Museum of Art.
