Jinying was a pioneering, award-winning first generation Chinese Jinshan Peasant Painter. Jinshan peasant painting is a Contemporary Chinese painting movement, originating in Shanghai in the mid 1970s. It was established, and driven by a collective of middle-aged, low income Chinese housewives, the only Asian art movement dominated by female artists. Jinying was one of the founding members of the style, and helped shape the movement with her background in embroidery. She is one of the most famous Jinshan artists, responsible for the first Internationally successful and recognizable Jinshan masterpieces, 'Fish Pond' (1982). A member of the Folk Arts Association of China, she has won several awards and has exhibited in the USA, Germany, Japan & Canada.The painting depicts the Chinese Tradition of the first presentation of a newborn, exactly one month after birth. The mother and baby are showered with gifts. This impressive original gouache was acquired at the "Weaving, Farming, Fishing, Feasting; Original Watercolours of Yangtze Village Life" Exhibition presented by Horstman & Godfrey Ltd.
